CLINICAL EVIDENCE

Quality Outcomes in Medical Tourism

Acules only partners with JCI-accredited hospitals. Here is what the evidence says about quality standards, patient safety, and outcomes at internationally accredited medical facilities.

JCI ACCREDITATION

The Gold Standard for International Hospital Quality

Joint Commission International (JCI) is the accreditation arm of The Joint Commission - the same organization that accredits more than 22,000 healthcare organizations in the United States. JCI accreditation applies international patient care and safety standards to hospitals outside the US, evaluating over 1,200 measurable elements of performance across clinical care, patient rights, infection prevention, medication safety, and governance.

As of 2025, JCI has accredited more than 1,000 healthcare organizations in over 70 countries. Fewer than 5% of hospitals in any given country typically earn JCI accreditation, making it a meaningful quality differentiator. Acules only admits JCI-accredited hospitals to its network.

What JCI accreditation requires:Hospitals seeking JCI accreditation must demonstrate compliance with International Patient Safety Goals (IPSGs) - standards covering correct patient identification, effective communication, high-alert medication safety, surgical site verification, infection prevention, and fall risk reduction. These standards align with the WHO's global patient safety goals.

What Research Says About Medical Tourism Quality

High Patient Satisfaction at Accredited Facilities

Patients who receive care at internationally accredited hospitals consistently report high satisfaction rates in peer-reviewed literature. Studies published in journals including the International Journal for Quality in Health Care and the Journal of Medical Tourism have found that patients who travel for elective procedures at accredited facilities generally report satisfaction comparable to or exceeding their home-country experiences, particularly for orthopedic and cardiac procedures.

Acules collects patient satisfaction data directly from its network and monitors scores continuously.

WHO Global Health Workforce and Infrastructure Data

The World Health Organization recognizes that several key medical tourism destination countries - including India, Thailand, Singapore, and Turkey - have invested substantially in healthcare infrastructure, specialist training, and quality systems over the past two decades. India, Thailand, and Singapore are home to hospitals that rank among the most technologically advanced in the Asia-Pacific region.

Accreditation and Adverse Event Rates

Research in health policy literature indicates that hospital accreditation is associated with improved adherence to clinical protocols, reduced rates of preventable adverse events, and better patient safety culture. JCI specifically requires hospitals to track and report adverse events and implement quality improvement programs - creating accountability mechanisms absent in non-accredited facilities.

Acules requires JCI accreditation precisely because of this accountability framework.

Surgeon Training and Specialization

Many surgeons at leading JCI-accredited hospitals in India, Thailand, and Singapore trained at top medical schools in the United States, United Kingdom, or Europe, and hold board certifications from internationally recognized bodies. High-volume specialty hospitals in these countries often perform procedures at volumes that exceed many US community hospitals, which is associated with better surgical outcomes in the evidence base.

Our Network Admission Criteria

JCI accreditation is necessary but not sufficient for Acules network admission. We also require: board-certified specialist surgeons, an active international patient department, English-speaking care coordination, documented outcome tracking systems, and current international medical liability coverage.
